I was wondering if this would work. For except the player uses Shocking Grasp for an action and they are able to do melee attack as a bonus action. Could they use the spell again on the bonus action melee attack or would that not work?

Making Shocking Grasp (or any attack) into a bonus action is a huge increase in power. The character could make a melee attack or cast another cantrip spell (such as Poison Spray or Green Flame Blade), effectively doubling their damage potential.

Xaelvaen To answer your question, no. A spell that allows you to deliver a melee spell attack does not count as a melee attack. Specifically, to my knowledge, the only thing that allows you to do something as a bonus action after casting a spell would be from Blood Hunter and Fighter (Eldritch Knight), which both specify a Weapon attack. Shocking Grasp certainly does not qualify as a weapon attack.

Now, using Quickened Spell from Sorcerer could let you use Shocking Grasp twice in one round.

Eldritch knight's war magic does just this

As a major (sub)class ability. In place of ALL the other fighter attacks.
