ORIGIN
Shawty Lo was an American rapper and founder member of the hip hop group, D4L. His debut album, Units in the City, was released in 2008 and featured the hit single “Dey Know”. He was the subject of the canceled reality series, All My Babies’ Mamas. Lo was born Carlos Walker on March 31, 1976 in Atlanta, Georgia. His mother was a drug addict, and his father was absent for most of his childhood. He grew up with his sister and grandmother in the neighborhood of Bowen Homes.

CAREER
Lo began his hip hop career as a member of the group, D4L. He later founded D4L Records label. The group was active from 2003 to 2006. The original members were Fabo, Mook-B, Stoney and Shawty Lo. D4L’s debut studio album, Down for Live, was released in November 2005 by Atlantic, Asylum and Ice Age Entertainment. The album peaked at #22 on the Billboard 200 and sold upwards of 40 thousand copies during the first week. The lead single “Laffy Taffy” topped the Billboard Hot 100 and was later certified 3x Platinum by the RIAA. The single “Betcha Can’t Do It Like Me” helped to propel snap music to mainstream.

Lo released one studio album, 3 music videos and 3 singles as a solo artist. His first single “Dey Know” was released in December 2007. It won a BET Hip Hop Award for Track of the Year. Lo followed up with the album, Units in the City, in February 2008. It featured the singles “Dunn Dunn” and “Foolish”. Rapper Gucci Mane also made a guest appearance on the project. Lo and fellow Atlanta rapper ‘T.I.‘ was involved in a public feud from 2008 to 2009. The two went back and forth with diss tracks before calling it quits in Marcy 2009. Lo’s D4L Records was signed to 50 Cent‘s G-Unit South from 2011 to 2015. The contract was reportedly worth over $10 million.

PERSONAL
Shawty Lo died on September 21, 2016 at the age of 40. He was killed in a horrific car accident on the I-285 southbound ramp to Cascade Road. He reportedly died from blunt force injury to the head. Lo was 5ft 6in tall and had a net worth of $2.5 million. He fathered a total of 11 children with 10 baby mothers. He welcomed his first child at the age of 17.
