Prodigy was an American rapper and member of the rap duo Mobb Deep. He was known for such hits as “Quiet Storm” and “Shook Ones”. His discography includes The Infamous (1995), Murda Muzik (1999), and his solo debut H.N.I.C. (2000). Prodigy was born Albert Johnson on November 2, 1974, in Hempstead, New York. He grew up in Queens, New York. His grandfather, Budd Johnson, and his great-uncle, Keg Johnson, were both musicians.

CAREER
Prodigy and music producer Havoc formed the hip-hop duo ‘Mobb Deep’ in 1992. Their debut studio album, Juvenile Hell, was released in April 1993 by 4th & B’way Records. It was led by the singles “Peer Pressure” and “Hit It from the Back”. The duo’s sophomore album, The Infamous, was released in April 1995 by Loud Records. It featured tracks like “Survival of the Fittest”, “Temperature’s Rising” and “Shook Ones Pt. II”. The album featured guest appearances from Q-Tip, Nas, Raekwon, and Ghostface Killah. Mobb Deep released a total of 8 studio albums including Hell on Earth (1996), Murda Muzik (1999), and Infamy (2001). Their 8th and final album, The Infamous Mobb Deep, was released in 2014. They have sold more than 3 million records throughout their career.

Prodigy released 4 albums and 17 singles as a solo artist. His solo studio debut, H.N.I.C., was released in November 2000 by Relativity Records. It peaked at #18 on the Billboard 200 and #6 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album featured guest vocals from N.O.R.E., B.G., and Cormega. His second album, H.N.I.C. Pt. 2, was released in 2003. Prodigy’s last 3 albums H.N.I.C. 3 (2012), The Bumpy Johnson Album (2012), and Hegelian Dialectic (2017) were released by Infamous Records. He did two collaborative projects with The Alchemist, Return of the Mac (2007) and Albert Einstein (2013). He was featured on Troy Ave‘s single “New York City” and on the track “Chase the Paper” with 50 Cent.

Prodigy was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison in 2008 for gun possession. During this time he worked on his autobiography, My Infamous Life, which was released in 2011. His other publications include H.N.I.C.: An Infamous Novel (2013) and Ritual (2015). He and journalist Kathy Iandoli co-authored the cookbook, Commissary Kitchen: My Infamous Prison Cookbook (2016). Prodigy was featured in the films Full Clip (2006), Blackout (2007), and Rhyme and Punishment (2011).
