A playground communication board that can help nonverbal individuals communicate with others has been installed at Keopuolani Park in Kahului, making it the first of its kind in Maui County parks.

Installed on Friday, the board is located at Hui Aloha playground, which opened in 2010 as the state’s first “boundless playground,” designed to give people regardless of abilities the opportunity to explore and play together, Maui County said in a news release Wednesday.

The playground communication board aims to help children who use alternative forms of communication, such as sign language, to communicate with other children. It includes symbols and pictures with words, as well as an alphabet keyboard and numbers, that children can use to communicate.
