Meg Ryan Sends a Warning to John Mellencamp's New Girlfriend

July 2024 · 4 minute read

Their relationship may be over, but according to a new report, Meg Ryan wants to warn ex John Mellencamp's new girlfriend about how he is as a partner. Radar Online reported that Ryan supposedly wants Kristin Kehrberg to know that Mellencamp is "poison" when it comes to his relationships, and will "make Kristin miserable," a source said.

Of course, Ryan has not spoken out about these claims herself, but the report does reflect the way Mellencamp has described himself as a partner to Ryan. In an interview earlier this year, Mellencamp admitted that he wasn't a good boyfriend to his former fiancée. Read on to find out more about these estranged exes.

In August, People reported that Mellencamp opened up about having a new girlfriend on Club Random with Bill Maher. On the show, Mellencamp didn't say Kehrberg's name, but revealed, "She's a beautiful 57-year-old woman who just walked into my apartment in New York unexpectedly. She was with a couple of friends. She walked in. She didn't know I was going to be there. I didn't know she was there. We met each other."

He added, "It's so hard to believe. I know. She has a really high threshold for tolerance." At the time, the 71-year-old said, "She has not left my side in seven months."

While Mellencamp didn't share Kehrberg's name, Page Six soon reported that his girlfriend was the "multimillionaire socialite," and published photos of the couple when they were seen together in public.

Radar Online reported that a source told the National Enquirer, "Meg believes John is poison to any woman and will only make Kristin miserable in the end. She's trying to get the message to her about what she's in for."

The source continued, "John may pour on the charm in the beginning—but he's selfish to the bone. Sooner or later he will slide back to his bad habits, like neglecting to call, forgetting birthdays, and showing up late—or not at all … Meg wants to open Kristin's eyes to John's bad boy ways and tell her things will go sour. It's inevitable!"

Best Life has reached out to a rep for Ryan for comment on the report.

Ryan and Mellencamp had an on-and-off relationship that spanned from 2010 to 2019. The actor and musician got engaged in 2018, but ended their relationship the following year.

A source who spoke to Radar Online claimed of Ryan, "Meg felt John could never settle down—and his active dating life since then has borne out her fears." Mellencamp has been linked to several women following his breakup with Ryan.

The source added, "[Meg] told him he's happier out on the road than he would ever be with her."

In interviews, Mellencamp has opened up about not being the best partner for Ryan. In 2017, while he and Ryan were broken up, he said on The Howard Stern Show (via Extra), "Oh, women hate me. I loved Meg Ryan. She hates me to death. I think it's because I'm a child. I throw fits, I gripe, I complain. I'm moody. Every bad thing that a fella can be, that's me."

More recently, in a June 2023 interview with Esquire, the "Jack & Diane" singer said, "I love Meg Ryan. I went with her for 10 years. She doesn't love me so much. She's a great girl. I'm just a [expletive] boyfriend."

While sources have shared their claims about how Ryan feels about Mellencamp, the star has kept her personal life private. One rare comment came in a 2019 interview with InStyle, in which she commented on their engagement.

"Yes, I'm going to get married at some point," she said (via Entertainment Tonight). "But for now this engagement thing is a state of grace."

Ryan has also stayed largely of the public eye when it comes to her acting career in recent years. The 61-year-old's most recent onscreen role was in the 2015 film Ithaca, which she also directed. But she will soon be returning to movies once again. Earlier this year, it was announced that she would be directing and starring in the romantic comedy What Happens Later, which co-stars David Duchovny. The film premieres Nov. 3.
